ARGOS
The greater Argos region located southwest of Greece, is dominated by vast expanses of citrus farms mostly owned by small Greek families with oranges and clementines as the main export crops. Most farming households are elderly and are organised into local farmers’ cooperatives linked to global markets. Factories and processing plants dot the Argolida region, where the plucked harvest is sorted, polished, and packed or converted into juices, fruit concentrate, and preserves. A significant proportion of the citrus produce is directly exported to Germany, Switzerland, and the Balkan countries. The migrant labour here is seasonal and entirely dominated by the Pakistanis who are paid piece-rate wages of .25 centavos for one big basket of picked fruit.
